About the Craft
Handmade leather goods inspired by the forest. Crafted to last a lifetime—and maybe longer.
I love leatherwork. It’s a hobby that pays, but more importantly, it’s something I genuinely enjoy. I make things from leather—things that are built to last longer than my lifetime, and possibly yours. I am simply making durable leather accessories, handmade leather wallets and accessories.
Why do I do it? Because I love working with my hands. I enjoy crafting practical, meaningful items that feel good to use and stand the test of time. Handmade artisan leather goods are surprisingly affordable—and when made well, they can last for decades. I use a water-based adhesive, so if a pocket ever wears out (which is rare), it can be repaired or replaced. That’s the difference between a disposable fashion item and a true luxury piece: longevity, craftsmanship, and care.
One of my favorite pieces to make is the valet tray—especially as a gift. No two are alike. Some have hand-stitched bases, others don’t. Some showcase the natural marks of the leather, while others are smooth and refined. I might add brass fittings, or keep the design minimal. They’re perfect for travel: flat enough to slip into hand luggage, and practical for keeping essentials in one place. And when you give one as a gift, it’s not just the tray that’s remembered—it’s you, the person who made it. That means something to me.
I sometimes use technology—like laser engraving or pattern marking—to bring precision and detail to my work. It’s a tool, not a shortcut. Other times, I hand-cut every piece myself. There’s something grounding about working directly with the leather, feeling its texture and letting the material guide the shape. Whether it’s tech-assisted or entirely by hand, the goal is the same: to create something durable, personal, and worth keeping.
There’s something meditative about hand stitching. The rhythm of the needle, the feel of the leather, the quiet focus it demands—it all slows the world down. When I stitch, my thoughts settle. Stress fades. It’s just me, the thread, and the work in front of me. Each stitch is a small act of care, and by the time I’m done, the piece holds more than craftsmanship—it holds calm.
Metsala is the name of this site, and it’s inspired by where I live—on the edge of a forest in the Finnish countryside. The outdoors is my inspiration, and simplicity is my style.
